The start of the dig!

We welcomed guests to La Cour during early February so after their departure we started the dig!
Unfortunately, Bubbles our cat became very poorly and after rushing her to the vet this week she had to be spayed as she had an infection of the uterus. The plan was for us both to dig like mad but Bubbles has been told to rest and recuperate in the house for 10 days. We understand this is essential to keep her well but ever active and outdoor loving Bubbles is very, very unhappy and is spending every waking hour (which tends to be between 11pm and 7 am) trying to escape through any means necessary. She is also very put out by the strange thing she has wrapped around her neck!
Therefore, through a distinct lack of sleep and trying to stop Bubbles from escaping Tony has been alone in the digging efforts. He is making a great job and the beautiful weather has really helped.

EDF

Before progressing with any building we wanted toe nsure connecting the house to the electrcity network was going to possible within our budget. The house will be approx. 55 metres from the roadside where our current electrcity meter is situated.

We submitted a request to EDRF whom gave the request to a subcontractor to do a feasibility study. After 2 months (we did have a 2 week Christmas shutdown in the time!) we eventually received the devis (estimate) for the works which was within our budget. So now we are at the beginning of January and ready to get going!

Obtaining the planning permission

Our next step was to submit a planning application for the new house.

We originally envisaged a single storey house but realised that the build costs in building on one level are much higher than a traditional two storey dwelling. It took us many weeks of researching and planning to eventually decide on a design which would have a minimum impact on the surroundings and would offer us sufficient and comfortable accommodation.

We submitted the plans in October 2009. The authorities asked for a little more information and on providing that our plans were accepted!

Applying for the Certificat d'Urbanisme

Before starting to plan the house build we had to verify that the authorities would allow for a house to be built on the plot. Our original request was for a house about 30 metres further down the plot but this was rejected as the land is deemed as protected status from construction. The authorities did offer us a compromise in building slightly further back up the field.

We made our request in August 2009 and this was granted in September 2009.

The photos show the plot on which we will build.
